Hey Amanda. In your case I’d probably just go with the Baz Bus as that will reduce your worries. If you don’t mind some of the limitations of the Baz Bus, you can enjoy the advantages. Most drivers do pick up backpackers along the way and I’ve seen messages in hostels offering rides, so this did seem to be quite a common thing.

Next September I will travel to SA for a few weeks, on my own and I’m not sure how to get around. I would love to rent a car and explore the country by myself, but on the other hand, I don’t really see that happen. It doesn’t feel very safe for a 24 year old girl to rent a car and drive around by herself in a country such as SA. Besides, it sounds quite lonely as well. Do you think it is realistic to say that, if I rented a car, it would be easy to find other (reliable) backpackers who would drive with me from town to town? Different backpackers in each town is, of course, no problem. Or should I just buy a ticket for the Baz Bus?

Verryyy rough estimate but if you’re backpacking (i.e. staying in hostels and such) maybe $50 to $60/day. Could make that less maybe if you’re cooking your own food and taking it easy on organized tours.

Including day trips at most stops/ Food & Drink etc…? Any help would be great thanks!

Hey Myrlon! 🙂 Yeah, the safety and convenience are amazing and so it’s a really easy option. When I went to SA I only had 3 weeks, and due to the limited schedule I think it ended up being much more planned and rigid than other countries have been. That affected my expectations a lot and made me a bit grumpy about the Baz Bus! *Loved* the Wild Coast too and wished I had spent more time there!

I get your point in your blog. For me it was a great option to take the Bazbus as I was traveling alone. I rather didn’t want to go through the country in a rental car all by myself. The Bazbus is a very safe way to travel around in South Africa. The downside for me was; you are definitely on the beaten track. The Bazbus is stopping at the popular places (towns and hostels) so there is no room to explore your own, less traveled path. Although the Wild Coast isn’t that touristic and a great area to spend some days.

I’m not sure, sorry! In general South Africa does strike me as a country where online and in-person prices are pretty much the same (unlike developing countries where there’s often a huge difference). But maybe there’s a specific thing with Baz Bus tickets I haven’t heard about.

I read somewhere that it would be cheaper to buy the ticket when in South Africa instead of booking in advance. Have you perhaps heard about this? I would be thankful for an answer if you still can see this.
